Maxtor Corporation: 7000FMT.EXE =============================== 7000 Series Drive Low Level Format Program Description: The 7000FMT.EXE program is designed and intended to be used only with Maxtor 7000 series IDE/AT hard drives. The 7000FMT.EXE program will Low Level format the hard drive and restore the media to it's original factory format. WARNING: All data on the drive will be lost when using this utility. Back up your data before running this utility. Maxtor recommends removing any other hard drives from the system before using this utility. This program is included on the Maxtor Utilities Diskette or may have been down loaded from the Maxtor Bulletin Board Service (BBS) or World Wide Web page (WWW.MAXTOR.COM). The following is the step by step procedure for performing this utility: Getting Started 1. Clean Boot your system to the “A:\>” prompt with a bootable DOS system diskette. 2. Insert the Maxtor Utility Diskette or the diskette containing the downloaded uncompressed file in the 3.5 inch Floppy Disk Drive and establish operations at that drives prompt. 3. If your are using the Maxtor Utilities Diskette, type "cd lowlevel\7000" and press the [ENTER] key. The DOS prompt will change to {drive}:\lowlevel\7000>. 4. Type "7000FMT" and press the [ENTER] key. This will execute the low-level program and bring up the Maxtor Disclaimer Screen. 5. To Accept the conditions of the Maxtor Disclaimer, type "Y" to continue or type "N" to exit and press the [ENTER] key. Options Menu: If "Y" was chosen to continue, the following Menu will be displayed: Options Menu (1) Select Drive (2) Low-Level Format Drive (3) Defect Scan (4) Set Format Options (5) Set Defect Scan Options (6) Return to DOS Procedures: The following are the recommended steps to successfully low level format the drive: 1. Select option (1) for "Select Drive" and press the [ENTER] key. 2. The Drive Selection will appear showing the hard disk drives in your PC. The prompt will read, "Select Drive ->". 3. Type "0" for the primary/master drive or "1" for the primary/slave and press the [Enter] key. After the selection is made, the Options Menu will appear on the screen. 4. At the Options Menu, select option (4) to "Set Format Options" and press the [Enter] key. The Format Option Menu will appear on the screen: Format Options Menu (1) Set Format Mode (2) Set Bad Sector Handling (3) Set System Retry Count (4) Return to Main Menu 5. Select option (1) for "Set Format Mode" and press the [Enter] key. The Format Mode screen will appear. It will Prompt the user: FORMAT MODE (E or F). 6. Type "F" for "Format Track" and press the [Enter] key. After the selection is made, the screen returns to the Format Options menu. 7. Select option (2) for "Set Bad Sector Handling", and press the [Enter] key. It will prompt the user: SELECTION (R or P). 8. Type "M" for "Mark Bad Sectors" and press the [Enter] key. After the selection is made, the screen returns to the Format Options menu. 9. Select option (4) "Return to Main Menu" and press the [Enter] key. The Options Menu is displayed. 10. At the Main Option Menu, select option (2) for "Low-Level Format Drive" and press the [Enter] key. 11. "--Low-Level Format Routine--" will appear on the screen. 12. Before continuing, confirm that the correct hard drive has been selected, type "Y" and press the [Enter] key. At this point, the Low-Level Format will commence. 13. When the low level format procedure has completed, select option (6) "Return to DOS" and press the [Enter] key. If the format completes with No-Errors, partition and high level format via your operating system. If any error is encountered and the 7000FMT.EXE returns an Error Code, the drive is no longer usable, make arrangements to replace the drive through the place of purchase or Maxtor Customer Service.* -------------------------------- *Warranty Restrictions May Apply
