W A R N I N G ! ! !
DO NOT USE ANY FOREIGN (NON ONTRACK) DISK DIAGNOSTICS ON
ANY NONSTANDARD DISK DRIVE ATTACHED USING DISK MANAGER.
MANY DISK DIAGNOSTIC WRITE TESTS ATTEMPT TO USE THE LAST
CYLINDER OF THE DISK DRIVE TO PERFORM THESE TESTS, AND IF YOU
HAVE A NONSTANDARD DISK DRIVE (CYLINDER COUNT NOT CORRECTLY
EXPRESSED BY YOUR COMPUTER'S ROM BIOS) THE DIAGNOSTIC MAY
INCORRECTLY CALCULATE THE LOCATION OF THE LAST CYLINDER, AND
INADVERTENTLY WRITE TO AND DESTROY DATA ON YOUR HARD DISK.
THIS MAY INCLUDE DIAGNOSTIC SOFTWARE NORMALLY BUNDLED WITH YOUR COMPUTER.

DISK MANAGER UPDATE INFORMATION
This version of DISK MANAGER provides user instructions in four levels:
* ON-LINE HELP - Executed with DISK MANAGER
* README file - Describes the DISK MANAGER automated installation
procedure.
* DM.REF - A text file containing operating instructions for
special environments (computers, controllers,
operating systems) and manual procedures, including
custom partition assignments, assigning variable
cluster sizes, etc. Refer to this file if you
are installing a second drive.
* HARDWARE.REF - A text file containing the general rules for
installing one or two internally mounted hard
disk drives in a PC or AT environment.
Our goal is to make DISK MANAGER easy for you to use. With On-line help,
you should be able to install your disk drive(s) with little need for
documentation. We suggest that you review this README file to ensure
that you understand what DISK MANAGER can do for you.
IF YOU REQUIRE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, YOU SHOULD REVIEW THE DM.REF FILE.
TECHNICAL SUPPORT
TECHNICAL SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE FOR THIS PRODUCT. HOWEVER, WE ASK FIRST
THAT YOU EXPLORE THE SUPPLIED DISKETTE-RESIDENT DOCUMENTATION FOR
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO ANY PROBLEMS, AND TO HAVE THE PROPER INFORMATION
READY SHOULD A CALL TO TECHNICAL SUPPORT BE REQUIRED.
Before you call us for technical assistance, please do the following:
1) If you are unable to load DISK MANAGER successfully after typing
"DM" from the DOS prompt, you have a hardware problem. Follow the
guidelines described below. Also, refer to the file "HARDWARE.REF"
for additional assistance.
2) Check your hardware connections (disk cables, jumper settings, etc).
DISK MANAGER will help identify a hardware problem. If the
error message "NO HARD DRIVES INSTALLED" appears, or if DISK MANAGER
is unable to recognize the presence of all attached hard disks, a
hardware problem is likely.
3) Execute DISK MANAGER DIAGNOSTICS to detect and correct cable
connection, controller card or disk problems. Note that the disk
scan test cannot be executed until the disk has been initialized.
4) Read this file, the DM.REF file, and the HARDWARE.REF file for
information that may be pertinent to your particular installation.
Our technical support phone number is (800) 468-3472. When you call,
we will need to know:
A) Your computer type
B) Your disk drive type
C) The version number of DISK MANAGER (as displayed when
DISK MANAGER is loaded.
D) Your DISK MANAGER serial number (as viewed when
DISK MANAGER is loaded from diskette).
DISK MANAGER FEATURES
THIS SECTION CONTAINS INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE AUTOMATED INSTALLATION
PROCEDURE ONLY. IF YOU NEED INFORMATION ON THE CUSTOMIZED INSTALLATION
PROCESS, SEE THE FILE "DM.REF", LOCATED ON YOUR DISK MANAGER DISKETTE.
DISK MANAGER by ONTRACK COMPUTER SYSTEMS is a software utility that
completely installs your fixed disk drive(s) for use with your IBM or
compatible personal computer system.
A complete disk installation requires low-level formatting, partitioning
and high-level formatting (preparation). DISK MANAGER performs these
activities AUTOMATICALLY, with several additional features available. The
primary features of DISK MANAGER are as follows:
Automated Installation Capability - Invoke this utility by typing
"DM (ENTER)" to initialize, partition and prepare a disk
drive for use.
Customized Installation Capability - Provides the user with the ability
to create a custom logical disk structure to meet specific
requirements. This feature also allows the user to selectively
change the write-protect status of any disk partition.
DOS Compatible - Operates under PC-DOS and MS-DOS. No alterations to
the operating system are required.
Partitioning Capability - Permits up to 16 disk partitions per drive,
so programs and program data can be organized for optimum disk
utilization. Provides the capability of assigning partitions to
separate users, thus providing additional data security. Simplifies
the use of DOS by reducing the need for subdirectories. DISK MANAGER
permits a boot partition as large as the DOS limitation of 32 MB.
Non-bootable, DOS-compatible Write/Read partitions may be as large
as 512 MB with DOS 3.X.
Increased Storage Capacity - Permits the attachment of disk storage up to
512 MB per drive.
Multiple Operating System Capability - Up to four operating systems can
exist on a single storage unit.
Reduced Back-up Time - Programs and data can be selectively backed-up due
to the partitioned disk structure.
Write-Protect Capability - Provides selectable write-protect capability on
each disk partition, preventing sensitive data from being destroyed.
Selectable Interleave For Each Partition - Allows the user to optimize the
performance of the software that operates from each disk partition.
Variable Cluster Size and Root Directory Size - Allows the user to optimize
the utilization of disk space.
AUTOMATED INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
This section contains the basic instructions for using DISK MANAGER's
automated installation procedure. These instructions apply for installing
any SEAGATE disk drive (having a ST412/ST506 or SCSI interface) in any PC-XT
or PC-AT (or 100% compatible) computer. If there is anything you do not
understand, or if you encounter a problem during installation, use the more
detailed instructions included in the DM.REF file on this diskette.
WE ASSUME THAT YOUR HARDWARE IS CONNECTED PROPERLY. TO EXECUTE THIS
PROCEDURE, YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW WHICH MODEL SEAGATE DRIVE YOU HAVE, AND
HAVE THE DEFECT LIST FOR THAT DRIVE.
STEP 1: CREATE A BACK-UP DISKETTE
For your convenience, DISK MANAGER is not copy-protected.
Create a back-up diskette by formatting a blank diskette and
copying the DISK MANAGER files onto it.
STEP 2: BOOT YOUR SYSTEM TO OBTAIN AN A> PROMPT
STEP 3: INVOKE DISK MANAGER'S AUTOMATED INSTALLATION UTILITY
From the DOS A> prompt, enter:
A>DM for monochrome display, or
A>DM/C for color display
DISK MANAGER's automated installation utility will lead you
through the entire disk installation process. On-line help is
available every step of the way. To use on-line help, simply
press the F1 key. There will be a prompt on your display to
indicate when help is available.
DISK MANAGER will:
A) verify that the drive you intend to install can
communicate properly,
B) prompt you to specify the drive model,
C) optionally allow you to enter the defect list,
D) prompt you for how the disk is to be partitioned,
E) perform low-level format, partition the disk, perform
high-level format, and leave you with a bootable
hard disk.
