Possible causes are: - not enough memory - wrong diskette is in the drive - the last command attempted in DOS failed - the last program that was run in DOS returned a fail-code *** DOSSHELL DOS Shell This DOS Shell can be used to run DOS programs and edit DOS data in ways that is not possible using the built in functions of PC-Doctor. The only limit is the available free memory, which is limited by the size of PC-Doctor. This Shell used the default DOS shell defined by the environment variable "COMSPEC", or if it does not exist, the MS-DOS default shell "COMMAND". *** CMOSSETUPHELP CMOS Setup This menu allows you to change the contents of the CMOS RAM. Any changes become valid immediately. To change an entry, select it using the cursor keys and ENTER. You can also load and save CMOS RAM setups from and to a file. We suggest that you save CMOS setups to floppy disks only, because an invalid fixed disk type number will make the drive inaccessible. To exit this menu, press the ESC key. *** CMOSHDSETHELP Fixed Disk Type This menu allows you to select a fixed disk drive type. If your BIOS includes a CMOS RAM setup program, we suggest that you use it to change fixed disk types. PC-Doctor can only show those drive types it located in the BIOS ROM. Custom drive type setup is not supported due to the wide variety of standards. *** BASERAMCMOSSET Base Memory Size This window allows you to select the amount of base memory that is installed in your system. The most frequent values are 512 and 640. A special test page will be printed that demonstrates printer functions and quickly illustrates potential faults. *** TERMINAL Serial Terminal PC-Doctor includes a simple terminal program for debugging modems and serial connections. This terminal does not support any terminal standards such as ANSI. The transmission rate is set prior to entry into the terminal mode. Other settings are permanently 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity. The terminal is exited with the ESC key. *** TERMINALCOM Serial Port Selection PC-Doctor can use any of the standard serial ports defined by the BIOS (COM1-COM4). Please select the port you wish to use. Press ESC to exit. *** TERMINALBPS Serial Port Speed Selection You must specify the speed that will be used for serial port communications. Other communications parameters are permanently set to 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity. Press ESC to go back to the previous menu. *** REMTYP Connection Type Select the way in which you want to go on-line: - Wait for call, wait until someone calls the modem and go on-line then. - Go on-line now, instruct the modem to turn itself on and go on-line. - Go on-line without modem instructions, i.e. force PC-Doctor to dispense sending any commands to the modem and go on-line right away. Use this for null-modem cables etc. Press ESC to abort. *** NOHDTABLE No Fixed Disk Type Table PC-Doctor could not locate the fixed disk drive type table in the BIOS ROM. Because of this it is not possible to display drive characteristics for each listed drive type. Instead the drive types are identified by number only. Check your manufacturers documentation for valid drive types and their definitions. *** SHOWSYSTINT List Software Interrupts This function lists all software interrupt vectors and where these point to. Software interrupts are those that can be activated in programs with the INT command. Software interrupts 8-FH and 70H-77H can also be executed by hardware interrupts known as IRQ's. *** MEMDUMP Memory Debugger This utility produces a memory dump in either hexa-decimal, decimal or ASCII form. This can be used to display memory locations and track errors. *** HEXDUMPER Memory Debugger You are now in PC-Doctor's Memory Debug utility. You can view memory contents in two numeric formats and as ASCII data. Furthermore you can change the size of numbers to Byte, Word or Dword (4 bytes). Memory addresses are listed in 20-bit absolute format. Use the cursor keys to change memory address. Press ESC to exit. *** HEXDUMPGOTO Goto Memory Location Enter a new memory address. Use either decimal or hexa-decimal numbers. If you use hex, remember to add an 'H' at the end of the string. Press ESC to cancel. *** HEXDUMPSEARCH Search String Enter a search string that will be used to locate data in memory. The search is case sensitive, thus a search key "Case" would not find a string like "CASE". Only the first 64 kilobytes from the current memory location will be scanned for matches. To extend the search, move the current address forward by 64 KB and search again. Press ESC to cancel. *** HEXDUMPSEARCH2 String Not Found The search did not find any matches to the key that you entered. The search is case sensitive, thus you may want to check the exact form of your search string. The search also covers just 64 KB of memory, i.e. you must change the current address to scan beyond that boundary. *** NOPCDRSTR Error Handling PCDR.STR File An error was detected opening, reading or assigning memory for the PCDR.STR file. PC-Doctor stores most of its text strings into a file titled PCDR.STR. This file must be readily accessible to PC-Doctor in the same directory as PCDR.EXE. PC-Doctor can not run unless PCDR.STR is loaded! *** BRD Battery Rundown This utility uses a special test to run down the battery in a laptop in a quick and efficient manner. All parts of the system will be run in parallel to ensure maximum battery power usage. PC-Doctor will also log the time it has run the Battery Rundown function, so that you can later determine how long your battery lasted. *** BRDTN Battery Time Not Valid PC-Doctor stores the length of the last Battery Rundown test in the RTC clock in the memory location assigned for the RTC Alarm function. PC-Doctor uses a special signature byte to indicate a valid Battery Rundown time. This signature byte was incorrect. Probably some program or the BIOS has overwritten the ending time of the Battery Rundown test. *** BRDM Battery Rundown Select one of the two choices: - Run the Battery Rundown function - Show the execution time of the last Battery Rundown *** BRDA RTC Alarm Active The Battery Rundown function uses the RTC clock's Alarm Time to keep track of the length of the Battery Rundown. In your system the RTC clock's Alarm Time is active, and thus PC-Doctor can't access those registers. Unload the application is using the RTC Clock Alarm or turn off the Alarm Function in your BIOS (if you have such a function available). *** BRDR Battery Rundown Time This is the time that the last Battery Rundown test ran. Please note, that there is a minor chance that the information shown in this screen could be false. This is possible if you haven't run the Battery Rundown test on this machine before and if you have at some point used the RTC Alarm functionality in this machine. *** IDEDATA IDE Drive Data This function displays information about a standard IDE drive. Shown data includes drive parameters, translation, model&version numbers and drive name. The data is read from the drive directly with a command that may not be supported with all IDE drives. This function does not work under OS/2 or Microsoft Windows. *** NWINFO Network Information This function displays either: - NETBIOS statistics information, or - network adapter configuration information NETBIOS information is shown if PC-Doctor finds an active NETBIOS driver. Network adapter info is only available if no network drivers can be found, and PC-Doctor directly supports the card that is installed in the system. *** ADDRSCAN Base Address Scanner This function displays available base addresses in a system. Some motherboards allow for PC-Doctor to scan for free memory addresses in both the I/O and 1 MB Base memory range. If your motherboard DOES NOT SUPPORT this feature, all memory locations in both I/O and Base Memory will be marked "In Use". NOTE: Some hastily designed expansion cards may cause this function to fail. If this is the case in your system, please contact WaterGate Software so that we can include support for the card. *** SCSIDEV SCSI Devices This function displays information about installed SCSI devices on all SCSI buses. PC-Doctor requires that either the CAM or ASPI SCSI interfaces are loaded. *** NOSCSI No SCSI Detected PC-Doctor did not find an ASPI or CAM device driver. If you have a SCSI card, install the appropriate device driver and try again. *** SELECTSCSI Select SCSI Bus PC-Doctor detected more than 1 SCSI bus. Please select the bus that you would like to work with. Press ESC to return to exit. *** UPTO3SCSI SCSI Bus Limit PC-Doctor can only work with up to three SCSI buses in parallel. The remaining ones are ignored. *** NOSCSIDEVS No SCSI Devices PC-Doctor could not find any SCSI devices on the selected SCSI bus. If you do have devices other than the host adapter attached to the bus, make sure that the SCSI ID's are unique for each device. Assigning one SCSI ID to two devices is the most commong source of SCSI bus problems. *** SELSCSIDEV Select SCSI Device Select the SCSI device that you would like to work with. Press ESC to exit. *** SELSCSICMD Select SCSI Command Select the SCSI command that you would like to execute. Press ESC to exit. *** SCSIDONE Command Complete PC-Doctor has sent the desired command and waited for the command resolution. If the device indicated an error, the status is FAILED. Commands such as INQUIRY return data that is listed in hexa-decimal and ASCII form. *** SCSITEST SCSI Testing This selection provides testing facilities for SCSI commands that can be sent to various SCSI devices. PC-Doctor requires that a CAM or ASPI device driver is loaded. *** REPCE Repetition Count Please enter the desired repetition count. It can be a number from 1 to 9999. Press ESC to cancel. *** REPCER Repetition Count Repetition counts must be in the range from 1 to 9999. Press ESC to cancel. *** OPTMH Test Options Through this menu you can select parameters for testing. For example, "Halt On Errors" allows you to specify that testing will be halted if errors are detected. "Pass Count" allows you to specify how many times tests are repeated. Press ESC to exit this menu. *** FDWH DESTRUCTIVE Diskette Test PC-Doctor contains two DESTRUCTIVE Floppy Disk Write Tests. These tests can be run as part of the diskette testing. If you enable destructive floppy disk testing using this menu, all the contents of your test diskette will be overwritten with test data. Press ESC to cancel change. ENTER to select. *** DFTH Destructive Testing Selected *** WARNING *** You have enabled destructive floppy disk testing. All data on the diskettes in the selected drives will be overwritten with test patterns. If you do not want to proceed with DESTRUCTIVE floppy drive testing, press the ESC or 'N'-key. To go ahead with the testing, press the 'Y'-key. *** WTW WRITE TEST SELECTED *** WARNING *** These write tests will attempt to preserve sector contents by first reading the original contents and at the end of testing by restoring that data. HOWEVER, an unexpected system reset or power outage that prevents restoring the original sector contents can cause permanent data loss to the sector that is being tested! This data loss could disabled access to all the information on the hard disk drive. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK! *** HEH Halt On Errors By default, PC-Doctor will continue testing even if errors are detected. By enabling the Halt On Errors -state, you can instruct PC-Doctor to pause testing if it encounters errors during testing. Press ESC to cancel change. ENTER to select. *** ELSH External Loopback Usually PC-Doctor runs an internal test of your serial and parallel ports only. However, if you have an external wrap plug, you can instruct PC-Doctor to also make an external loopback test. Specify the type of your wrap plug here. An incorrect wrap plug setting is likely to generate error messages even if the port is working correctly. PC-Doctor's on-line manual contains the wrap plug definitions in Chapter 8. Press ESC to cancel change. ENTER to select. *** HDTT Hard Disk Scan Type You can select one of the following types of scans: -Read Test: Reads sector data only (fast) -Write/Verify: Writes sector data and uses the Verify command to make sure the sector data is readable. (slower) -Write/Read: Writes sector data and uses the Read command to read back all written data, and make sure that the data came back correctly. (slowest) *** WARNING *** The Write tests will attempt to preserve sector contents by first reading the original contents and at the end of testing by restoring that data. HOWEVER, an unexpected system reset or power outage that prevents restoring the original sector contents can cause permanent data loss to the sector that is being tested! *** NOCDR No CD-ROM Detected PC-Doctor could not detect the CD-ROM drive. This could be because the CD-ROM device driver or the Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions (MSCDEX) has not been loaded. PC-Doctor uses MSCDEX and the CD-ROM device driver to access the CD-ROM drive. *** SELCDT Select CD-ROM Test This menu allows you to select which test will be performed on your CD-ROM drive. To test the full functionality of your CD-ROM drive, we suggest that you run through all tests in the order that they are in this menu. Press ESC to exit. *** CDTEST CD-ROM Test This selection provides tests for the CD-ROM drive. The testing is performed using the functionality of the Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions (MSCDEX.EXE) and the CD-ROM device driver. If these are not loaded, PC-Doctor will not recognize your CD-ROM drive. *** CDRRES CD-ROM Reset Failed This test is performed by running a CD-ROM device driver command that resets the CD-ROM Drive. Some device drivers will fail the reset if no CD-ROM disk is in the drive. To make sure this is not the case, make sure that there is a CD-ROM disk in the drive and try this test again. The drive is likely to have a problem only if it fails this test continuously. *** CDROPCL CD-ROM Tray Open/Close The CD-ROM Device Driver allows PC-Doctor to send commands to the CD-ROM that will open and close the disk tray of the CD-ROM via software control. This functionality is not implemented in all CD-ROM drives. And even if the function is supported by the drive, the CD-ROM device driver must also support it. If nothing happens after issuing a command, the drive does probably not support that function. Press ESC to exit. *** CDRINS CD-ROM Test Disk Please insert a CD-ROM disk into the CD-ROM drive. This disk will be used for testing the drive. If the disk has surface defects, these might cause PC-Doctor to report errors. For best results you should repeat testing with a different CD-ROM disk if you encounter any errors during testing. Only if errors occur in identical locations in the same way, is there reason to suspect that the drive is faulty. *** CDRNOCD No CD-ROM Disk Detected PC-Doctor could not detect a CD-ROM test disk in the drive. You might get this error message by mistake, because some CD-ROM device drivers do not immediately identify a freshly inserted CD-ROM disk and might indicate to PC-Doctor that no disk is present even though one is there. If this is the case, you should try to run this function again and no more problems should exist. *** CDRSP Speed Factor Selection PC-Doctor allows you to specify a speed-up factor that makes CD-ROM testing faster. This is needed because reading all the information from regular CD-ROM drives might take up to one hour (if the speed factor is set to 1). At the highest speed (speed factor 10), testing will only take 1/10th of the time it would take with speed factor 1. Usually making testing faster will not impact the accuracy of CD-ROM drive testing. However, if you want to make a thorough test of your drive, select speed factor 1. Default speed is 5. Press ESC to abort testing. *** CDC Cache Control PC-Doctor will by default disable the CPU internal and external caches during memory testing. However, you can change this behavior so that the cache is always left turned on, or that the cache alternates between on and off. In the alternating mode you have to set the pass count (number of repetitions) to something higher than 1. Then every odd numbered repetition (1, 3, etc.) will be executed with cache disabled and even numbered ones will be run with the cache enabled. *** TSPRT Tech Support Form This selection allows you to quickly create a report that contains your contact information, a brief description of a problem, and system information that is gathered by PC-Doctor. *** CDE Customer Information Please enter your contact information and a short description of your problem. You can use the cursor keys, TAB and ENTER to change fields. Use the backspace key to delete incorrectly entered data. When you are ready to continue, press the F5 key. Press ESC to abort. *** TSPHLP Information Attachments Select which of the standard Hardware Information choices you would like to attach to this report. We suggest that you include all if only possible. When you are ready to continue, press the F5 key. Press ESC to abort. *** REMOTE Remote Mode Control This selection will enable and disable a remote connection. If you are not on-line, selecting this choice will open a connection menu. If you are already on-line, this selection will allow you to go off-line without exiting PC-Doctor. *** REMTYP2 Connection Menu Please, either select the way the connection will be established, or change the connection setup. The current serial port and speed setting are visible in the title-line of this menu. Some modems may require special initialization strings so that they will operate correctly. You can set these strings in the setup menu. Press ESC to abort. *** REMT3 Remote Connection Setup This menu allows you to set the serial port, interrupt and baud rate that will be used for establishing the remote mode. Some modems may also require a special initialization string (such as AT&B1&M4 on US Robotics modems), which you can also change. *** RLCDEI Is LCD Switching Required? If the current system is a laptop with either a Cirrus Logic or Chips&Technologies video BIOS, and the laptop is connected to an external monitor, PC-Doctor can automatically execute all video tests using the LCD screen, video monitor, and simulscan. To activate this special mode, answer 'Y' to this question. *** LCDH LCD Switching Not Available On selected laptops PC-Doctor allows to switch the video display between the built-in LCD screen, an external monitor, and simultaneous scan. The current system is either not a laptop, or the VGA chip/VGA BIOS are not part of the list of chip/BIOS combinations on which PC-Doctor knows how to switch the display. *** LCDMH LCD Switching Menu Select the display choice that you would like to activate. Please remember that if your system is not a laptop, these functions will not have any effect. Also, if you do not have an external monitor, but switch to it, you might not be able to switch back to the LCD screen. Note: Some VGA chips do not support the simultaneous video scan. If yours does not, the display will not switch to SimulScan mode. *** SPTEST Stereo Speaker Test This function allows you to determine if the stereo functionality of your sound card is working correctly. This test requires that you have a SoundBlaster Pro compatible sound card. *** NOSB No SoundBlaster PC-Doctor could not detect your sound card. This test requires that you have a SoundBlaster or compatible sound card. *** IODA I/O Use This function displays how your I/O memory is being used by different devices. Available areas are indicated with dots so that you can identify them easily. Any memory area indicated by this scan as available can be used for new expansion cards. PLEASE NOTE: The scan performed by this function is done at the hardware level. Some devices such as network cards have a "feature" that locks them up if anyone tries to scan for them. If your system locks up during this scan, TURN OFF your computer, perform a CLEAN BOOT, and redo the scan.
