[Use cursor control keys to scroll through text, depress ESC key to exit.] -- OPTIONS INFORMATION -- The Viking 2/91 Windows 3.1 driver has several options to customize and control the operation of the Viking display in both the Windows environment and the standard DOS environment. The majority of these options are speci- fied through a configuration file which the Viking Window's driver (as well as other Viking drivers) reads when the Windows program is started. The driver searches for a configuration file named VIKINGI.CFG or VIKINGIP.CFG in both the current directory and the root directory of the currently selected drive. If Microsoft Windows has been installed for a landscape monitor then the driver looks for the file VIKINGI.CFG. If a portrait monitor is used then the file VIKINGIP.CFG is used. If the driver does not find the configuration file in the current directory (e.g. C:\WINDOWS) then it will search the root directory (e.g. C:\) for the file. If a configuration file is not found in either directory then the driver will use a default operating mode. The Viking configuration file is created by the user with any text editor that can create an ASCII only (no hidden codes) text file. Special keywords/ keyletters are stored into the configuration file to select the various driver options. Only one keyword or keyletter may be stored on a line and it must stored at the beginning of a line. The keywords/keyletters are listed and described below. ** Viking Configuration File Commands ** Keyword Description ------- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Pnnnn Indicates to the software the base I/O address for the Viking board. The default I/O address is 03E8 (hexidecimal). The I/O address may be redefined by storing a 'P' or 'p' followed by the hex I/O address. For example, P2E0 specifies the base I/O address as 02E0 hex. Note, this command is for the PC/AT Viking 2/91 board only and should not be used with the Viking PS/2 Controller board. Please contact Moniterm Technical Support for changing the I/O address on the Viking 2/91 PC/AT board. When using a Viking configuration file with the PC/AT Viking Controller, the Pnnn command is mandatory even though the base I/O address is not to be changed. The Pnnnn command is used as a safeguard to reduce the possibility that a file is in- correctly mistaken for a configuration file. Dual Indicates to the software that a standard display (e.g. EGA monitor) will be used to display the DOS output and that the Viking frame grabber should be disabled. This command is valid for both the PC/AT and PS/2 Viking Controller boards. Dual monitors are especially useful with Windows 3.x. Under WIN 3.x, a DOS application may be run in a Window's window or in Full Display mode (Alt Enter). Normally, when a DOS application is run in Full Display mode, all that is displayed is the DOS application and the Windows output disappears. When running dual monitors (e.g. a CGA display and the Viking display), and Full Display mode is selected, the output of the DOS application is displayed on the standard dis- play while the Windows output remains on the Viking monitor. With this situation, the user is able to view the output of the Windows applications while working with the DOS application on the standard display. RVideo Indicates to the software that the DOS display (frame grabber) should be output in reverse video - white background with black characters instead of black background with white characters. This command is only valid for the PS/2 Viking board. Zoom Indicates to the software that the DOS display (frame grabber) should be zoomed (expanded) to make use as much of the large display area as possible. This command is only valid for the PS/2 Viking board. MS1 Used to specify a larger graphics cursor size in Windows. The graphics cursor may sometimes be difficult to locate or see. With this command all of the graphics cursors, the pointer, the hourglass, and so forth, are doubled in width and height (from 32x32 to 64x64). VB Used to specify to the driver that the program VBIOS.EXE is install- ed (VBIOSP.EXE for Viking Portrait). ~ The tilde character, '~', indicates to the driver that the Viking Controller board should only be accessed with 8-bit transfers even though it may be plugged into a 16-bit slot. Mn This command is only recognized by the Viking Windows driver and is used to specify a special display mode. The default display mode of the Viking Windows driver is 1280x960 for the landscape monitor and 960x1280 for the portrait monitor. The Viking Windows driver is cap- able of making use of extra display memory on the Viking 1 controller board. This extra memory may be used by the Windows user to display a larger application window and/or display additional Windows appli- cations. The optional display modes based upon the Viking monitor type is given below. Viking 2/91 (19") Landscape Monitor Display Modes: 0 - Standard Display mode - 1280 (H) by 960 (V) * 1 - Extended Display mode - 2048 (H) by 960 (V) 7 - Portrait Display mode - 1024 (H) by 2012 (V) Viking 2400 (24") Landscape Monitor Display Modes: 2 - Standard Display mode - 1280 (H) by 960 (V) * 3 - Extended Display mode - 2048 (H) by 960 (V) 8 - Portrait Display mode - 1024 (H) by 2012 (V) Viking Portrait (19") Monitor Display Modes: 4 - Standard Display mode - 960 (H) by 1280 (V) * 5 - Extended Display mode - 960 (H) by 2044 (V) 6 - Landscape Display mode - 2016 (H) by 1020 (V) * Default display mode To select an alternate display mode, the letter 'm' or 'M' followed by the appropriate display mode number (0-8) is stored into the Viking configuration file. For example, if the user has a Viking 2/19 19" landscape monitor and the Extended Display Mode (2048x960) is desired then 'M1' is stored into the Viking configuration file. Also note that an alternate display mode be selected at run-time by depressing the Scroll Lock key prior to starting Windows. If Scroll Lock is on prior to starting Windows then after the Window's Logo has completed, a menu will be displayed whereby the user may select an alternate display mode. After doing so, the Viking Windows driver will operate in the selected mode until Windows is exited. The next time Windows is run, the Viking Windows driver will operate in the default display mode or the mode specified in the configuration file. The contents of an example PC/AT Viking configuration file is listed below (VIKINGI.CFG or VIKINGIP.CFG): P3E8 - Set base I/O address (default). Dual - Disable Viking frame grabber output. The contents of an example PS/2 Viking configuration file is listed below (VIKINGI.CFG or VIKINGIP.CFG): RVid - Reverse video DOS display Zoom - Expand DOS display on Viking monitor NOTE FOR VIKING PS/2 USERS: One of the very first things Windows 3.1 does is display the Windows 3.1 logo. While the logo is being displayed the Viking PS/2 monitor shows nothing but a flashing horizontal line at the top of the screen. This problem is caused by the Viking PS/2 board not knowing that the VGA is in graphics mode (to display the logo). The program VKINIT.COM for landscape monitors and VKPINIT.COM for portrait monitors will correct this problem. The VKINIT program need only be run one time using the syntax below: C:\>VKINIT A or C:\>VKPINIT A If there are a questions regarding the operation of the VKINIT/VKPINIT program replace the 'A' in the above example with a '?' and help information will be displayed.
